Rosalia's May 11th show in Pittsburgh was a thoroughly satisfying punk rock sing-along, simultaneously classic and fresh. Both retrospective and current, the band played a generous, packed hour and fifteen minutes. Rosalia continues to add new dimensions to their signature sound, recorded and live. Especially featuring other musicians, this show's best quality was the variety, with some older tunes taking on satisfying new layers with arrangements by John Gaunt on fiddle. After hearing two songs with their gospel-blues singers from the latest album live, I'm convinced punk rockin' blues gospel is the sound of Rosalia having come of age. The Pgh. Post Gazette reviewer said it seemed the crowd wasn't really into the opening bands; however, I got the impression that a lot of us were simply soaking in the rare mild weather. Seriously, that day, the sunshine and fresh air were like valium. Also, the size of the venue meant that the energy from the stage had pretty far to travel and dissipate before it reached the spread out grassy area. That's a minor drawback compared to the years Rosalia fans have been turned away from the 'Burg's sold out shows at insufficient venues.
